Giovanni Bellini (Workshop of): The Engagement of St Catherine,

Ultraviolet and infrared examinations revealed that this painting was heavily damaged over the centuries. Pigment analyses revealed that the painting was fairly recently 'restored' but with totally inappropriate pigments painted over a partially cleaned painting. In effect, the former retouching was matched to a dirty surface. Many layers of previous overpainting had to be meticulously removed. Filling, delicate retouching and a final application of varnish completed the conservation and restoration process.
